Project Description:
Stoa Alieos is a listed heritage building located in the heart of the historical centre of Ioannina. Its restoration was conceptualized around the need to preserve and promote the special structural and morphological characteristics of a “Stoa”, namely a 1800’s building serving as a shopping center at that time. It was one of the most important retail complex of the city of Ioannina, built right after the great fire of 1869, and it has special historical significance representing both a gathering place for citizens, as well as a typical example of local folk architecture. It consists of stone-built buildings (one-story and two-story with a basement), which develop on both sides of an internal pathway that connects the streets Aneksartisias and K. Katsari. The careful restoration of the buildings aims not only at the preservation of this historical monument, but also at its smooth reintegration into the encompassing urban fabric, in order to reclaim its status as a center of attraction for the inhabitants of the city.
