Dilofo, Zagori

Restoration and Reuse

Project Description:

In the traditional settlement of Dilofo, Zagori lies the two-story building, which today houses the hostel “Vera Inn”. A typical sample of a traditional house in the greater area of Central Zagori was converted into a tourist accommodation. The strict tower-like form, the simple facades, symmetry in combination with the construction elements: thick stone walls, detailed built elements on the facades, plastered and painted part of the main facade, interior wooden constructions; all these consist the special features of the building. Starting from the existing shell, the study for the restoration and reuse of the building was based on one hand on retaining its special morphological and structural characteristics, while on the other, on incorporating with creative manipulations the functional requirements of its new use. The addition, which arose from the operational needs of the accommodation and took place in the second year, followed the structure and typology of the existing building, so that the final result forms a single whole, harmoniously adapted to the unique environment of the settlement.
